By far the most useful thing used in the lessons is a small bag of black beans. They're useful for teaching numbers, playing games, and practicing adding and subtracting in English. In one lesson, we were using the beans to learn about "more" and "less". The children were each given a small pile of beans and asked to count them. We then talked about who had more, and who had less.
After a few rounds of this, one student who had been given one of the larger piles of beans asked if he could spend a little time with the piles. He quietly and intently focused on counting all of the beans, and dividing them into even piles. In the end, there was a small pile for each student, each with the same number of beans, with a few left over. He then asked me how to say the word "equal". "There," he said, beaming. "Now we have equal piles for everyone. And if we plant these extra beans, then we will have more for everyone."
